Waterstone receives SAPOA’s Top Award for Innovative Excellence in Property Development: Best Residential Development 2010

The greater development known as “Waterstone”, in Century City, consists of three distinct entities all gaining access to a beautifully landscaped public area called Waterstone Square. The three entities are: Waterstone East, Waterstone West and Waterstone Isles.

Rabie Property Group  commissioned MaC Architects to create this exciting residential development some five years ago. Having been party of the Century City phenomenon since it’s inception, MaC Architects, under the leadership of Denis Maas and Wim Coetzee, with their intimate knowledge of the locale, were ideally suited to create this award winning complex.

1970 Tokai farm house, “Mountain rejuvenation

The spectacular mountainside of Swaanswyk in Tokai exudes a rejuvinating energy of the rich heritage and splendid surrounds, and most of all, a lifestyle to aspire to.

This impressive family home is set on one of the origional farm settlements of the greater Constantia and Tokai valleys, where the history traces back to the roots of many Capetonians.

Denis Maas of MaC Architects says the origional house was an existing clinker-brick single-storey ranch style “spec house’, built in the 1970’s. The elegant house is now fashioned with subtle combinations of timber tones, various wall finishes, fabrics and shutters to form a restfully harmonious composition. Large open-plan living areas and a beautiful glass and timber atrium, double volume roof and huge window spaces, enhance the feeling of lightness throughout.

MaC Architects  –  “Thinking differently

cropped-img_3883.jpg

Mary Haw of PJ Carew Consulting assisted Aurecon’s international team of sustainable building specialists with documentation relating to the Green Star SA rating process. She reports that the Aurecon Century City building “has achieved a 5-Star Green Star SA rating with none of the ‘gadgets’ that one may associate with a green building. there are no photovoltaic panels, no wind turbines or ‘new age’ materials.”

This demonstrates that a commercial office building can reach a high level of sustainability by good design that is within an average budget of this type of office building. At MaC Architects, green interventions are well integrated into the building design rather than being an afterthought.

Aurecon’s second Century City building, designed by MaC Architects, to seek green star rating.

When Aurecon’s Century City office building in Cape Town was built in 2011, it was the first building in South Africa to be awarded a 5-star Green Star SA Office Design v1 rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA). The company is now expanding its office space and is developing a second building that will be adjoined to the first one via a sky-bridge. The existing building will be renamed Aurecon East and the new building will be called Aurecon West.

The decision to pursue a Green Star SA rating was not only one that fulfills the group’s aim to reduce its carbon footprint but also made business sense: “Profit aside, it’s the right thing to do for our planet,” says Aurecon’s Cape Town Office Manager, Ferdi Nell.

Aurecon West will comprise of 3,280m² of premium office space. Completion is scheduled for November 2015.
