Fulton Award

MaC Architects wins the 2017 Fulton Award.

WINNER: Buildings up to 3-Storeys
Glen Crescent House

Judges’ Citation:

Glen Crescent House is an excellent showcase of concrete. Not only is concrete the principal structural element in this project, but it is the primary finish for walls, floors, roofs, ceilings, columns and elements such as staircases, fireplaces and water features. The wide range of architectural concrete finishes and formwork-induced textures demonstrate the versatility of concrete as a construction material and as a superior finish of choice. Textures imprinted with lime residue from formwork contrasts with highly polished and pigmented concrete surfaces and precast staircase elements to create a sophisticated concrete palette.

Set against the landscape this meticulously executed house not only blends in, but it is a celebration of the poetic surface qualities which only concrete can achieve. The result is worthy as the winner of the Fulton Award in the “Buildings Up to Three Storeys” Category.

Mentorship Breakfast

MaC Architects at Trafalgar High School.

As part of a Mentorship Breakfast, MaC Architects visited Trafalgar High School in District SixCape Town, South Africa to speak to the youth and engage in their fears and aspirations.

Dominic (one of the learners at Trafalgar High School) had wonderful things to say and spoke highly of the experience. Interested in art and design, he felt that chatting to practicing Architects, and being offered a glimpse into what Architects do, inspiring. “It has given me a vision to work toward and I now know of what it may entail to work in the industry.”

One of the younger boys, Abduragheim, was encouraged to make goals to work toward. Abduragheim doesn’t have a clear idea of what field of work he wants to enter just yet, however, we took the time to chat to him about the importance of having a goal/ direction even if he doesn’t have a full picture in mind.

MaC Architects took plans and drawings along to show the students; this helped the learners conceptualize what an Architect does.

“Your interaction with the learners was invaluable and will leave a lasting impression.” Holly Murray – Matric Teacher 2017

Trafalgar High School was the first school built in Cape Town for coloured and black students. The school took a leading role in protesting for democratic policies.  MaC Architects will continue to invest in the youth and future of the country.

Top Billing and Amazing Spaces

House Newport –  Featured on both Top Billing and Amazing Spaces.

A shared love for architecture

If you live in a house like this then every day feels like a staycation.

The couple who built this easy-living showstopper have both been in property for years. Di de Ridder and her partner Clive met through the industry and their home is an expression of their shared love for architecture, design and of course – the perfect location. Clive project managed their build while the interiors and finishing touches were Di’s canvas.

They’ve kept it simple and chosen to let stand out fixtures and heirlooms define the character of each room. Wherever you are, you never feel cut off from any other room in this house and the understated staircase and upstairs gallery add to that sense of freedom of movement.

Broad, sweeping space, defined by views is best appreciated in the master bedroom. Whether it’s the complex foundation of this seemingly simple garden or the architecture’s mix of diverse American, Indian, Argentinean influences, it all comes together with ease. That is style.
